Transferring XP to replacement PC

Thinkpad T41 developed problems last spring, I think because of an
overheating battery. It would run for a few minutes when using electricity
but eventually when it warmed up it would freeze. I replaced with a Lenovo
3000 N100 with Vista preinstalled. Now I would like to know whether I have
any options to continue to use the XP system that was on my T41. I called and
ordered a set of restore discs but apparently I can only install them on the
old T41 (which doesn't work). If I send them back and ask for XP discs that
will work on the Lenovo, can I get those instead?

The reason for using XP is that some of my peripherals won't work with
Vista, such as my scanner. I thought installing XP would be less expensive
than buying a new scanner so wanted to give that a try.

Lastly, I'm not much of a techie so please assume I don't know much about
this and you'll be right. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

From an End User licensing Agreement standpoint - no matter what happened to
your T41 (melted, stolen, sold, still functioning) - the license of Windows
XP that came with it stays with it and cannot be transferred to anything
else.

Thanks for the quick reply. If the software has to be used only on the old
machine, I suppose I would need to replace the hard disk (assuming that
really is the problem). Could I use the external hard drive I already have
and install the OS there?

Never mind that last question...I read your post a little more closely and
see that XP can't be transferred to "anything else" so I'm guessing that
means it can't go on an external hard drive. It looks like a replacement
drive for the T41 is fairly spendy so maybe that's not the best choice
either. Guess I'll just see if I can return the recovery discs since they
don't seem to be usable on anything I have. Appreciate the help with this
question.
