Installing XP in the Ubuntu partition

Hi,

I have a Lenovo Laptop 3000 N100 with Vista Home installed. I
partitioned it and installed Ubuntu 7.1 on it with Grub bootloader.

I now want to :

(1) Remove Grub & Ubuntu
(2) Install XP in that partition.

Do I uninstall Ubuntu & Grub totally and then install XP ? How do I
do that.

Or

Do I install XP directly over the Ubuntu installation. Will Grub
detect that or will there be a conflict with the Windows boot-loader?

How do I do that?

Any help will be appreciated.

PS : Windows Vista runs like a lame donkey and I want to use XP.

1) make sure that you have the XP drivers for your laptop's
hardware. Check with Lenovo on whether they're available.
2) tell us whether you want to keep Vista Home on the laptop
or not.
3) tell us if you'd like to keep Ubuntu as a 3rd OS if you could.

PS : Windows Vista runs like a lame donkey.

=8-0 I've never seen it go that fast.

A lot depends on whether grub is in the MBR or in the linux partition. If
it's in the MBR, removing linux will result in neither being bootable.

Personally, I would remove Vista, as that has few conceivable useful
purposes, whereas Ubuntu does. You need to reformat the VIsta partition to
install XP, as Vista's type of NTFS isn't compatible with XP.

Before you even start please verify with Lenovo that there is an OEM version
of
Windows XP for your particular laptop model with all the correct drivers
available.

Just re-format the current Ubuntu partition, and then install XP in it as a
"from scratch" installation. Be careful with making new partitions if previous
partitions had been made by Vista or its installer:

Even if you had altered the MBR by putting the initial part of the Grub
loader inside it, the XP installer will replace that with a new Microsoft MBR.
Then fix things up for Vista as this web page directs:
