Transferring Windows XP to a new PC

I've removed the hard drive from a customer's old PC, mostly to retrieve any
information that will go on her new PC, which I'm building. Can I use the
key code from her Windows XP to load Windows XP on the new PC. Everything
will be new, including the hard drive. Once this is accomplished, the older
hard drive will be erased and discarded. Also, if I can do this, and
realizing that the customer no longer has her copy of Windows XP, can I use
any copy of Windows XP that I have on a CD?

I appreciate your response and you may be saving both of us the price of
purchasing Windows XP again.

OEM (sticker on old machine - Windows XP did not come in a nice case but in
cellophane wrapping?)
-- Then no, the license is non-transferrable according to the End User
License Agreement agreed to by continuous use on the old machine.

Retail/Upgrade? Sure.

How To Ask Questions The Smart Way

Correct...The can't-peel-off-once-put-on-sticker, is on the old machine. I don't know if it came from pack or envelope. Once before, I had to do this and when it came time to enter the key code, I was informed that it wouldn't activate. I called the 800 number and the MS rep checked the number and then gave me a very long string of new numbers and then it worked. Do you think this is worth a try. I mean, I won't get arrested for trying and it may be one of the good ones. What do you think...and thank your for the information.

As I said - in accordance withthe End Users Licensing Agreement you and the
customer agreed to whenever the OS was installed and every subsequent use of
it - you cannot transfer that copy/license to another machine even if
everything else was stolen, you had the same CD it came with and 25
different ways to prove you purchased that license of Windows XP
legitimately.

From a technical standpoint - it depends on what information you leave out
and not much technical standing in your way - particularly when you are
going to have to use a generic OEM CD to install with that product key
anyway.
