Transferring Programs and Files

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that you were confused. Windows Easy Transfer
that ships with Vista transfers only Data and Settings, Windows Easy Transfer
Companion that is available on Download Center migrates Applications only.

In order to migrate Office 2003 to your Vista PC, you will need to uninstall
the trial version of Office 2007 from your Vista PC.

Cheers!

I have a question,,,what about if my old xp pc won't boot up,,probably
motherboard or power supply issues,,,can I still from transfer when all I
can get to will be the new Vista interface on the new PC? Or did I need I
need some other software after the fact to get the data from the other hard
drive that won't boot?

thanks

Have a similar situation to JoeB bellow and am having just a world of trouble
trying to get my files off my old hard drive onto a brand new computer
running Vista. Tried Easy Transfer by way of connecting my XP drive as a
slave (Old computer is dead) and everything moved, ran the program back from
the stored file with no errors whatsoever. Only problem is nothing showed up
anywhere ...

After consulting a variety of sources was told to go with USMT 3.0 as an
alternative but cannot get the download to setup properly, recieving an error
message; "Not enough storage is available to process this command".

Have read through every conceviable technical paper I can find on WET, USMT
3.0, scanned the internet for days and still am coming up empty.

No WET is designed to migrate data and settings from a running system. You
can install the old drive as a slave drive in the new Vista installation and
manually copy some data. That will be much harder and you won't be able to
migrate accounts and account settings.

I have a new Dell computer enroute with VISTA HOME PREMIUM.I invested in the
cable to transfer everything from existing computer to the new one. In trying
to learn how to use it properly, I note that "Programs" are not transfered.
If this be the case, what i the value of investing in the Belkin VISTA
approved cable for transfering my WINDOWS XP setup to the new VISTA Dell?

For transferring Settings and Data. There is a Windows Easy Transfer
Companion that is in Beta, and transfers programs. I haven't used is so I
can't comment on how/if it works. It's a beta product so take appropriate
cautions (make sure you have an image of the systems). Personally I would
recommend installing apps from the original media, but if you want to try it
out, here's a link to it.

I installed vista business and decided to go for the ultimate instead. I
foolishly transferred my data to an external drive using the new transfer
system, and now that I reformated and installed ultimate, I cant get my stuff
back. It seems to want an old computer. I even saw adter the fact where it
said not to back it up like I did. Any help would be great, my life is on the
line!

Hp just replaced my a1700n mediacenter(vishmpre) with an a1710n (vis hm pre)
and I've been told that I can't transfer files/folders/contacts from vista to
vista no way, no how, none of them. Lots of lost work from a program that
promised so much and delivered so little. To bad there isn't a restore point
to get my old desktop system with xp back,(I donated It)

Nobody seems to have dealt with the problem I have. I simply want to select a
few individual files from my old PC running XP, and transfer the selected
items to my new lapyop running Vista. However if I insert a disc or use a USB
flash device and right click to select "Send to" and then select "Documents"
I get a mesage teling me that "Windows Explorer has stopped working" "Windows
is looking for a solution to the problem" and then "Windows is closing down".
It's driving me nuts. I have tried using "Easy Transfer", but find I can't
just select the few files I want to transfer. I've tried the one where you
are supposed to be able to select the bits you want, but it still insists on
downloading all sorts of stuff I simply don't need. Surely it is possible to
just select the files you want?

So what happens if someone gives you a CD or DVD with files created in XP
they want you to deal with? Shouldn't they open in VISTA?

Is it Microsoft that is causing the problem, or is it a bug in my computer?

Someone has told me to look in "System" to see if an error is listed. I've
clicked on "System" but can't see anything.

I desperately need HELP!

I hope you didn't buy a Dell just yet?
I have 4 dead Dell's All have problems with the USB ports (laptops).
Eventually they won't work and get giggley. They of course are attachted to
the Mother Board so fixing these USB ports is well...forget it!
It happens just after your warranty period is over of course.
Try a Sony, Toshiba, or do some research on the web about Dell and other
brands. There is a long line of people wanting recalls on certain Dell
models. I had two of the "work horse" older models (just a few years), and
so much for the nag!
The intelliMover and cable worked great for me. I used it and all the
sudden my new computer was like my old computer! Yes you need to use your
actual program discs if you have them but I didnt have any problems. Just
make sure you read the directions and load the program onto the old computer
first etc.
Hope this helps some to yours and the above questions.
And as with some other comments, Vista is getting on my nerves! I have home
premium. I think any version is going to take allot of adjusting. I liked
XP. There are a few new things that make life easier but more annoyances
than not.
Sincerely,
K.

I was told when I purchased my new laptop with Windows Vista that I would
need to purchase the new 2007 version of Office--that my previous version
that I use on my desktop with Windows XP will not work. I was also told by
someone else that if I wait a few months or weeks, someone will come out with
a patch which will make that make my already owned version of Office work
with Vista without making a separate purchase.
