transferring files

I just bought a new computer with windows xp installed. I have the hard drive
from the old computer with all of my files and user setting installed as a
secondary(slave) drive. My question is how do I transfer all of the user data
to the new hard drive and have xp recognize the users? I tried the file and
transfer wizard and it did not work. any suggestions?

With the old hard drive installed as a slave drive on your new
computer, the best you can accomplish is to manually copy files
from one drive to the other. To complicate matters, you'd
probably need to take ownership of many of the files on the old
hard drive.

If you want to use the File and Settings Transfer Wizard,
you'll have to put the hard drive back in your old computer,
run FAST on that computer using your XP installation CD, save
the files to a convenient location that's accessible by the new
computer and then run FAST on the new computer. Take a look at
these articles for more info:

If you don't have an XP installation CD your best option would
be to use a USB flash drive to create a wizard disk.

Good luck

You can migrate the data, but the new XP install will not recognise the old
user accounts or the settings. You will have to re-create them.

You need to run the transfer wizard *before* you remove the drive from the
old system.

You may also have to take ownership of the folders on the old drive to gain
access.

However, if your old system was XP Pro *and* if you encrypted files, but
did *not* back up the account credentials, you will not gain access to the
encrypted files in this way.

I regularly use FileSync for moving data from old drives to new. This is
much more reliable than the Windows copy tools, which have a tendency to
just give up if errors are encountered.
