I have an old pc running win 98 with a failing hard drive
(new bad sectors at every start-up). I have purchased a
new pc with win xp home and would like to transfer files
that are recoverable from old hard drive to new pc. I can
slave the old drive to the new pc. What steps do I follow
then? Thanks in advance.

Put the old drive in the new computer as a slave, and boot it up. XP will
see the drive and install it. Then open explorer and copy your files over.

If you know how to copy files from one folder to another on the
same drive, it's exactly the same; the fact that the files are on
a second drive is irrelevant.

Having installed the old drive in the new machine, simply copy
them to the new drive, using any of the standard ways of copying
files: copy and paste, drag and drop, copy command from a command
prompt window, etc.
