Files and Settings Transfer Wizard?

It depends on how much you had. If you had 100's of gigabytes of data,
could be a while. If you had very little, then it should be done.

You did not explain HOW you got to this point very well..

Did you run Files and Settings Transfer Wizard on one computer and save the
files to the other computer? Or to itself? Or what? Or are you just
copying files from one computer to the other? What speed is your network?
Is it a hub or a switch? Is it going through a cable modem/DSL to transfer
the files or are they on a private network that get their Internet through
the router?

......you said......... I said............
........... to answer this...............

Shenan........

I have 2 toshiba laptops, both running XP home... the new one is a PIV
2.8G, the old is a PIII 1.0G... the network is a DSL connect with
11mbpm (I think that is what it says)... I did the wizard to a zip
drive hooked to the new lap via USB... and then hooked it to the old
one and ran the program which gathered all my old files according to
what I picked... I have Office Pro 2003 on both... and a few games...
I did what it asked and then after a few hours it said that the old
one was through and the new one said that it was "applying my user
settings" as it is as I write this (on the old lap)... so I am not
sure I did this correctly but it seemed to work ok but never did stop
or complete the process.............. I am considering stopping the
run and starting over.................. I followed the directions but
it seems to be way tooooooooooo long.......... even with large amounts
of data...............

what should I do?

thanks...............

I suggest going with your gut feeling and starting it over.
I have seen files and settings transfer wizard do this to me, take so long I
KNEW it was not doing anything.. I run it a second time (after a reboot and
killing AntiVirus software) and it all works as planned.

AS an afterthought and update......... I have to tell you I just
stopped the process on the old computer and started restarted the new
computer and all but a few of the settings and files are on the new
one so it must have been done properly except that my mail accounts
are screwed up............ I had Express on the old and also had just
started using Outlook '03 when I bought the new computer......... now
the only problem I can see.......... is that my mail is not coming
through on the new computer......... what can I do about that... I
know about exporting using the .pst but that did not seem to work and
I think I am now in another question so I guess I will try the .pst
thing and hope that will work................

thanks...........

You could export your old Outlook Express email/settings/etc:
http://www.pchell.com/support/backupoe.shtml

Then import them to your new computer's Outlook Express. Then import your
email accout and settings in Outlook 2003.

good info... I will give that a try....... probably work...

thanks again Shenan.........

What connection are you using? And how much data was selected to send?
If all you have is a serial port connection, it will take forever -
maybe a kilobyte a second. A USB one might manage a few hundred k bytes
a second. Parallel port in between. . .
