Transfering Favorites XP to Vista

A

Alderbrook

I am following the instructions to import favorites in Internet Explorer. I
now have the Favorites from my xp computer in the Bookmark.htm file in the
Documents folder of the new Vista computer. The following Instruction 6
is:"Select the folder where you want place the imported bookmarks, and then
click Next."

It sounds as though I need to move the contents of Bookmarks.htm to another
location, so the Favorites will appear when I click the star on the browser.

Am I correct, and if I am, where do I move the Bookmarks.htm contents to?

Open IE (on Vista) and File>Import and you'll see where you can point
the import dialog to your bookmark.htm file.

All I do is copy the contents of the Favorites folder in XP to the one in
VISTA. The reverse works as well.

Open the html favorites file using Notepad.

Delete the line <!-- saved from url=(0022)http://internet.e-mail-->

I just tried the same: on Dell PC with Win XP I loaded Windows
Explorer, clicked File and Import/Export to call up the Wizard and
exported all my favorites including sub-menus. Then I e-mailed the
resultant Bookmark.htm as a file attachment to my new Toshiba laptop
with Vista.

Switching to the Toshiba I received the e-mail and saved the attachment
in my Desktop Downloads folder and with Windows Explorer did the same as
above in reverse to Import the file from my Downloads folder.
everything went well until the Wizard finished. then I got a
message:"not a valid bookmark file."

I opened the file and all the bookmarks are active links. I clicked on
one to load that website, saved it as a favorite in my new Favorites,
and it worked. so the links are accurate. why wont Internet Explorer
receive it. I even thought that maybe the sub-folders had something to
do with it, so did the whole thing again with only one folder. same
problem. what am i doing wrong?

Hi Ramesh,
thanks for your answer. It worked.
In fact i was going to copy my favorites to a portable drive so I could
paste them into the favorites on my laptop as PaulB suggested, but the
files are so large, my poor drive is still copying. Oh well, I will now
have an emergency backup.

I missed the first part of this chain ..... I downloaded my favorites onto a
memory stick, how do I get IE to import it from the memory stick. And where
do I find the file address it asks for. Sorry, I know these are very basis
questions....I am not techie at all. Thank you for your help.

Hi Stephanie,

How did you copy the favorites to the flash drive? Here are the instructions to Import/Export Favorites in IE7.
