Transfer to a new hard drive

I want to install a new large primary hard drive--can I install the new one as a slave and transfer all the existing files and operating system to the new one then make it the primary and boot drive?
As always any advice will really be appreciated--Mel

Thats easy to do,set new as slave to C: on the same IDE chain, format the
new drive with a primary partition,once thru,go to run,type:
XCOPY C:\*.* D:\ /c/h/e/k/r Agree to all in the DOS window. Also,D: being
the new drive, but if asigned diffrent letter, then use that letter.Once the
DOS
window ends youre thru,C: is now mirrored to D:

That won't work with system-folders in XP.

You either need a purpose-made utility like Drive Image or Ghost, or you
need to do the copy with another OS (other then othe one on the disk being
copied.) Possibilities are BartPE, Ubuntu or Knoppix, all of which run from
CD. BartPE is the easiest to use.

Go to http://www.acronis.com and download the 15 day trial version of
TrueImage 9.. use it to clone your drive onto the new drive which you will
have set up as slave to your present boot drive.. follow the on screen
instructions which explain about what to do after the process has finished..

Good luck

What have you got against people wishing to clone their drive contents to a
new, larger drive?.. why are you so eager to lead them down a route that can
only end in failure?..

Yes, you can do exactly that. Go to your Hard Drive manufacturers site and
download software they provide to do such a thing.
In short, you install the new drive jumpered as cable select and connected
as a slave. You then use their software to prepare and setup the new drive
and then image your old drive to the new one. Once finished with that, you
shut down the computer and switch the hard drive connectors [being certain
that both are jumpered as cable select]. You will then have the new drive as
the master and the old drive as the slave. At least, this is how Maxtor
does it. Follow the instructions at your hard drive manufacturers site.

Use a disk cloning utility, such as the Acronis True Image recommended
by Mike Hall or check with the hard drive manufacturer's web site for
a free cloning utility you can download.

Good luck

FYI.. software supplied by Maxtor for cloning drives royally screws up MS
Office and Adobe Reader abilities to read their own files.. for the OS
alone, not a problem..

Thanks for the tip Mike. Most of my work is with Western Digital hard
drives and I seldom see a Maxtor in my shop or at a client's,
