I want to transfer pictures from an Old PC to a New PC. Both PC's have
Windows XP, however the Old PC has a non-functioning CD drive. So I can't
burn a CD or read in new software. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Both PC's have
Windows XP, however the Old PC has a non-functioning CD
drive. So I can't
burn a CD or read in new software. Any ideas?

1. Do both PCs have internet access? If so, email the pix
from the old machine to the new. Or email them to someone
who emails them back to you on the new machine.
Alternatively, upload the pix from the old machine to some
place on the internet and then download them from there to
the new machine.

2. Buy, beg, borrow, or steal a USB memory stick reader or
pocket drive etc and attach to the old machine. Load the pix
onto USB device. Connect device to new machine and save them
to that.

3. Get a *lot* of 3.5" floppy disks and...

4. Print the pix out and get a box of crayons and...

I think the Files and Transfer Settings Wizard is the way to go. If both pcs
have network cards and you have a "patch" cable to connect to both cards.
You can select the picture folders and files you want to transfer and do so
right over the cable. You can find the wizard by going to
Start/programs/accessories/system tools/

What is the total size of the files to be transferred?
For a large transfer, remove the drive from the old computer and connect to
the new.

Opinicus has several darn good solutions, but disregard the floppies.
You can also try the RJ-45 crossover cable if you have LAN ports on both
puters. Then you can synchronize from one to the other. If you cannot burn
a CD the most useful way would be to use an external USB thumb drive/memory
stick of about 256mb or larger, most photos are less than 1mb.

Put them all into one folder. Open AIM on both machines. Right click on the
name of the target machine from the source machine and choose "send file".
Choose "Directory" and browse to the folder with the pics in it. Click on
send. Go to the other computer and browse to where you want the folder saved
and accept the file transfer. Wait. How long would depend on your Internet
speed. Done. AIM is the only instant message service I know of that will
allow you to send a folder, not just files.

This is also a good idea. After you have the old drive installed into your
computer (as a slave) you can copy your pictures to your new drive, reformat
the old drive and use it as storage for pictures or other media.

At least that's what I did :)

There are several approaches to doing something like this. Which
is best for you depends at least in part on how much data you
have to transfer. Here are some choices:

1. Transfer them on diskettes.

2. E-mail them from the old machine and read the E-mail on the
new one.

3. Network the two computers, and just copy the files over the
network.

4. Temporarily (or even permanently) install the old computer's
hard drive in the new computer and just copy them over.

5. Temporarily move the CDR drive to the old computer.

6. Use a USB thumb drive
