transfer folder from XP to Vista via LAN

I am trying to transfer a folder from my old computer, that only works in
safe mode and has Windows XP to my new computer which has Vista. So I shared
the folder on my old computer with everyone and then tried to get to it over
our homenetwork.
The network is ok, I can see the folder in my Explorer on my new computer.
But when I click on it, it says I don't have access to it. I can not figure
out how to get access. What should I do?

How are you sharing it on Windows XP (in safe mode?! or safe mode with
networking?) - by that I mean are you using Simple File sharing or have you
turned that off?

Windows XP what? Professional? Home? etc?

I have Windows XP home edition.
And of course I used Save mode with networking, how else could I see this
computer on the homenetwork? The network is ok, it's just that I don't get
access to the folder. I shared the folder like this: Rightclicked on the
folder, then 'Sharing' then I choose full options and to share it with
everyone on our local network. And after doing this, it does show up on the
other computer. So that's ok. I just can't get in, because when I click on
it, it says that I don't have the right to access it.
I think it might have something to do with the fact that in Vista all
objects have owners, while in XP they didnt?

In a sense. You need to map the share using local (to the sharing machine)
user credentials. The reason I asked the version was that Simple File
Sharing is all that is supported in Windows XP Home Edition... Well - in
standard terms - booting in Safe Mode as an administrator could change
things a bit.

Assuming the user (administrator) has a password on the Windows XP machine -
you could try mapping the drive from command line on the vista machine.

Open a command prompt (Run as Administrator on your Vista machine) and enter
the command:
net use x: \\computername\sharename /persistent:no
/USER:computername\localusername
--> Press ENTER.

That should prompt you for the remote user's password. Enter it.

Then you should have "X:" mapped as a drive with the same permissions as the
Windows XP machine's user "computername\localusername"...

Thank you! But... I must be doing something wrong, because I get a
systemfailure 67: networkname not found, so I guess I fill it out wrong?
Should it be like this:

net use X:\\my old XP-computers name\sharing name of the folder
/persistent:no /USER:my Vista computers name\my username on the Vista
computer?

And if the sharing name I gave to the folder contains spaces, do I type
underscores where the spaces are?

net use x: "\\XPComputerName\ShareName" /persistent:no
/USER:XPComputerName\LocalAccountOnXPComputer

That is net <space> use <space> drive_letter: <space>
<quotation_mark>\\XPMachineName\ShareName<quotation_mark> <space>
/persistent:no <space>
/USER:XPMachineName\AccountwithPasswordandShareandFileandFolderAccessonXPMachine

Hope that helps!

Thanks again! I tried, and I solved the problem! But... not with your
command, because I am too stupid to figure out how to use the syntax. No, I
thought of something else... pretty dumb I didn't think of that before:
Instead of GETTING the files FROM MY OLD COMPUTER I just SENT the files TO MY
NEW COMPUTER. That is, I put filesharing on the Vistamachine on, logged on to
my old computer and copied the folder I wanted to the Vista machine..... oh I
am so sorry I didn't think of that before....

But thanks anyway!

Hah!

Good job! You are not the only one who didn't think of it - obviously...
Makes perfect sense to try the other direction!
