Transfer all contents of c: to new hard disk

I want to install new hard disk as a slave and transfer
Windows XP and all other contents (programs and data)of
the original c: drive to the new drive. After transfer I
would like to switch master/slave and use new disk as a
c: bootable drive and format old original drive as
additional storage. Is this a valid way to do this or is
there a better procedure?
