How can I transfer messages and addresses from Outlook/XP running on one
computer to Windows Mail/Vista running on another computer?

regards,

Michael Greco

I've been wrestling with the same problem getting info from Outlook 2000 to
Mail.
Mail would stop working if I told it to import Outlook files.
Finally succeeded.
1-Export from Outlook (.pst file) to Outlook Express 6 (.dbx file)
2-Export from Outlook Express to a new file folder accessible in Vista
3-In Mail, import messages from Outlook Express 6
4-Browse to new file folder and select it even if it says there aren't any
files matching your criteria in it. Make sure folders.dbx is there and all
files are not read only.
5-The path will likely contain a double entry(this is a glitch). Hit browse
again and select again and the double entry in the path will likely disappear.
6-Click next and select the folders you want to import.

Not sure why but mail duplicated all my messages in each folder. Had to go
through them and delete every second message.

You must have Office Outlook installed and functional on your new Vista
machine in order to do the transfer; Outlook is the "missing MAPI client"
from the error message you're getting. Two choices:

1. Install Outlook on your new Vista PC. With Outlook closed on the old PC,
make a COPY of your Personal Folders (.PST) file. Take this copy to your
Vista machine and place it in a folder. DO NOT OVERWRITE the .PST file
created with the Outlook install. Make sure the copy is NOT set Read Only.
Open Outlook, go to 'File|Open|Outlook Data File' and navigate to the .PST
copy. Open the file. You'll now have access to all your old email,
contacts, calendars, tasks, etc.

2. Export everything in Outlook on your old PC to Outlook Express on your
old PC. Make copies of all your Outlook Express .DBX files (including
Folders.dbx) and your .WAB file and place them in a folder on your Vista PC.
Use these instructions to import your email from OE to WM:

To import contacts from the .WAB file, double click it and follow the import
wizard prompts.
