training software setup question

We are arranging for standard training on .Net. We plan to use our working
laptops, not prebuilt traing workstations (the ones trainers just copy their
course material software needs onto for each new class). We do NOT want that
image on our laptops. We have most of the software installed like MSVS .Net
2005, but we don't necessarily want SQL 2000 Dev Ed installed. I think MSVS
..net 2005 installed an instance of SQL 2005 Express. Can we use that to load
data, and tweak connection string (ought to work). Pre-Reqs also state Visio
2002. Some of us have 2002 some 2003, does it matter that much? And the
biggie question, class requires VB6 be installed. Most of us will have MSVS
..Net 2005, buit not VB6. We have VB6, can it be safely installed after MSVS
..Net 2005 installed?

Basically it would be nice if instructor pointed us to the "Labs" to install
and started from there with minor adjustments to configurations based on a
less than idea/perfect training setup.

Any comments would be appreciated,

This should work.

I doubt it. Depends on *why*.

I think this is okay, too. The question I would ask is *WHY* you need to
have VB6 installed in order to do .Net programming.

The whole thing sounds a little kludgey. Why do you need Visio in order to
learn .Net? Are they going to talk about UML? And the VB6 thing makes no
sense at all.

Good luck.

Hi,
We have VB6, can it be safely installed after MSVS .Net 2005 installed?

Yes, we could install VB6 safely after VS05 has been installed. These two
production won't conflict with each other.
Basically it would be nice if instructor pointed us to the "Labs" to
install
and started from there with minor adjustments to configurations based on a
less than idea/perfect training setup.

Sorry that I couldn't understand what you mean in the above sentence. If
you need VB6, VS05 (you're right that VS05 contains SQL Server 2005
Express) and Visio for your training, you may install them all on your
laptops. Note that, to use SQL Server 2005 Express, you need download SQL
Server Management Studio Express.

Hope this helps.
If you have any question, please feel free to let me know.

Sincerely,
Linda Liu

it is training. the "WHY" isn't really important. the need exists. There
is a "foot-print" the vendor requires. We cannot meet that footprint with
our work pcs and we do not want them rebuilt. it is a lot of work to buck
just going with the defaults and running vendor "setup" script. then we know
course material works. but it also costs a HUGE amount of money going this
route. and our work pcs are close to being course ready - just not on same
versions.

we now know there is an issue with visio 2003 accessing visio files from
earlier versions. that shouldn't be an issue but is apparently.

and yes, i'm thinking UML/visio too, anyone would. but it doesn't really
matter. maybe the course "slides" are presented in visio format who knows.
what is known is the vendor has stated the hardware/software footprint to
support the course - that footprint is somewhat dated.

we are going to build an instructor pc and student pc using our
setup/software and see if it flies.

but thanks.

it is training. there are modules/exersizes to upgrade from old version to
new version. so vb6 is a pre-req.
