over the years, what with changing internet provider several times, i lose
track of usenet posts that have been posted in the past.

is it possible to find these doing a search with regard to the actual
computer that has been used. i.e. using some identity unique to that
computer?

Not with a computer identity. Posts are generally archived and
searched by the posting address. You can use Google Groups
to locate your posts.

Go to Google Groups and do an Advanced Groups Search on the name(s) you
posted under.

If you find one of them, they have a "profile" which shows a calendar with
the number of posts (for that username) for each month/year.
Also the option to "find all post by this user".
If you use advanced search put in the name of the group you want just the
way it shows
msnews.microsoft.com with the dots.
I haven't searched microsoft groups that way but that's how it works
for the usernet (talk, alt, etc) ones.
You can also search using a date range in advanced search.
