The track changes feature in the new Word gives too much information. I like having the comments in balloons, but I do not like having every deletion and substitution documented. You can see from the red-lining in the text that a word has been crossed out or added or that formatting has been changed. I edit manuscripts, and I am forced to print out my edited version on an older computer running Word 97 to present a clear document. Is there anything I can do? Does Microsoft offer any patches or updates that deal with this problem

Thanks

You can disable the balloons in Tools | Options | Track Changes. FWIW, it
was editors who requested this type of layout (because it doesn't change the
layout of the document).

Thanks but this doesn't really solve the problem. When I
turn off the balloons, the comments page at the end of
the document also has entries such as "On April 19 at 10
AM Kennie Lyman deleted a comma." and "On April 19 at
10:01 AM Kennie Lyman added a semicolon." I just don't
need or want that much documentation. It gets unmanagable
when there are a lot of corrections, and it is impossible
to correlate the comments with the text. What I really
want is to be able to show word changes in the text
alone. The crossed-out comma and added semicolon will
show up in red. Then I want to add comments where
necessary. Having them in balloons would be lovely, but
if this isn't possible, at least go back to the Word 97
version of having them on a separate page. Is this
possible?
