have you updated all your drivers, especially video?

When you say "...stay up..." do you mean on-line? If so, you probably have a
virus and the most likely culprit is the Blaster worm.

Repost here. Help can be e-mailed directly to you.

BTW, XP works fine. Trouble is always with third party apps - drivers, etc -
or improper installation.

Okay, Andy.

As you are sending an e-mail, I guess you are on-line when it crashes. In
which case it is most likely the Blaster worm. Help and the removal tool is
available from here http://securityresponse.symantec.com/.

To stay on-line longer, try this. Start/Run, type services.msc. Scroll to
Remote Procedure Call (not Locator) and disable it. If you have not
installed SP1 from Microsoft, visit http://support.microsoft.com/ and
download and install it. While there you can look up "Blaster" to find out a
lot more.

If you don't think it is any of this... Have you tried booting to the CD and
carrying out a Repair Installation?

Do you have any specific problem(s) that you need help with, or
are you just venting? Why do you prefer to blame the OS, rather than
the individual(s) who obviously botched the installation and
configuration?

It sounds like an issue of incompatible/sub-standard/defective
hardware, or device drivers, or defective/sub-standard wetware.
Further, WinXP is much more sensitive to borderline defective
hardware, particularly RAM and hard drives, than is Win9x/Me.

Have you installed the most recent WinXP-specific device drivers
for the PC's components? Does the PC's manufacturer offer a BIOS
upgrade to provide true WinXP-compatibility? Are all of the PC's
components on Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility List (HCL)?

Some of the biggest problems I have seen with XP instability actually
has nothing to do with XP. From my experience, XP has been one of the
most stable OS's that Microsoft has put out in awhile. Most of the
problems have been because of hardware. XP does seem to stress the
hardware more than other OS's, especially memory. If you have a
borderline bad memory module, then you might have problems with XP where
you don't with 98.
