Tools to fix Internet Explorer

In my Win98 setup, I could repair Internet Explorer by going to Add/Remove
Programs but I see that Internet Explorer isn't listed with Win2000. Is
there a different way of repairing it if necessary?

Re-install it. You may have to do it twice: The first
re-installation might be an update only.

Thanks Carrie, that's useful.

I wrote to this ng because I've run IE5.5 without problem on my Win98
machine and thought that this lack of tools might be a Win2000 thing.

I wondered if this was a version of IE which came with Win2000 (I got my PC
second-hand with Windows and IE already installed).

Hi again Evi,

Having no option to remove Internet Explorer in the Add/Remove Programs tool in
Control Panel after installing Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1) (and perhaps other
SP's) is a well-known problem. For more information see the following Microsoft
Knowledge Base Article which also answers your question about the "version of IE
which came with Win2000."

I had a similar situation, and felt that uninstalling SP1 was an awfully
drastic approach to repairiing IE. What I did was to copy the uninstall
registry entry from a machine that hadn't yet been updated and merged it
into the registry on my machine. I'm not positive that it worked
completely because I really didn't want to repair or remove IE, but it's
worth a try if you're contemplating something more drastic anyway. The
exported registry entry looks like this. I've numbered the lines because
at least one will most likely wrap. Each original line begines with a
digit, colon, and space that are not part of the actual data.

1: REGEDIT4
2:
3: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\IE40]
4: @=""
5: "DisplayIcon"="D:\\Program Files\\Internet Explorer\\iexplore.exe"
6: "DisplayName"="Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2"
7: "UninstallString"="rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance D:\\Program
Files\\Internet Explorer\\IE Uninstall\\W2KEXCP.EXE /u"

Thanks for the advice Gary. I'm too chicken to do big registry stuff. I'll
wait until the thing goes badly wrong and then I'll reformat. At the
moment, my Win2000 CD is an older version than the Win2000 on my second-hand
PC so I can't replace bits of files that are missing (and I'm guessing that
the version of IE I have - 5.00.3315.1000 - was on the CD) but once I
reformat, if I have the same problem, I'll give it a go.
