I handle tech support for a major govenrment contractor. Our customers are
running Windows XP.I have a customer who is trying to customize his toolbar
in Word 2003.. He will go to tools/customize/commands and tools ( for example)
He drags a command i.e thesaurus to the toolbar.
When he closes out of Word and goes back in the command is missing from the
toolbar.

I cannot recreate it on my system.

any ideas? Corrupt normal.dot file?

Sal:

You say your user's customizations do not persist between Word sessions.
Perhaps the template to which he saves his customizations is overwritten at
the start of each session (common if IT is "pushing" macros or styles over a
LAN).

Have the user create a personal customizations template, located on his hard
drive. Have him save his customizations in this file and see if that helps.
There's a "Save in" or "Save changes in" list in the customization dialog
boxes that lets the user specify where the customizations are saved.

Bear has suggested one possible explanation. Another is that Normal.dot is
not being saved when you quit Word. This can be caused by an add-in such as
that used by Acrobat 7. For more on this (and a workaround, FileSaveAll),
see the last portion of
http://www.gmayor.com/lose_that_adobe_acrobat_toolbar.htm.
