Too much virtual memory (possibly)

I have an old application that is no longer supported and to which I am quite
attached, and it won't install on my new machine.

It installed and ran OK on my old machine, under XP Pro with 256Mb. Now
under XP Pro with 1Gb it refuses to install and says "This program requires
at least 3MB of free virtual memory to run".

I've tried running in compatibility mode (Win2000 & Win98) to no avail -
same message. My best guess is that it can't comprehend the additional
memory and so thinks there isn't enough.

I'm aware (thanks to a post elsewhere from Ron Martell) that I can restrict
the amount of memory that Windows sees (using the /MAXMEM= option in the
BOOT.INI) but I don't want to do that if I can help it.

Is it possible to deny access to some of the memory just to a specific EXE
file?

Yo,

why mess about with it if it's not compatible with XP .... install VMware
and run a virtual windows 98 machine with as much or as little memory as you
want to allocate to it ...

If you dont have a copy of VMware you can download MS virtual server 2005 R2
and create a virtual machine on that ...

To emphasise the point on my post, it ran fine under XP Pro in a machine with
less memory. I don't think it it XP Pro per-se that it has a problem with,
just the amount of memory it thinks it is seeing.
