I have 56 processes running at the same time almost all
the time. I need to know if there is anywhere or
anything that can tell me how I can get rid of the
processes I dont need and which ones I do and dont need.

In Control Panel, go to Adminstrative Tools, Services. There you can
manage services: start, stop, and setup how they start on boot-up. Take
note of the explanatations of what these services do.

Do this with the understanding that as you shut them down, you may stop
functionality that you really intend to have.

Frankly, having 56 processes running is probably no big deal (as long as
they aren't computer viruses or spy ware).... XP needs many of these
services to do it's thing. Some of course can be shutdown to no ill
effect, but you'll probably not notice anything different other than
piece of mind that the number of processes has been brought down.

Brandon,

Disabling all of the unneeded services frees up many Mega Bytes of Physical
memory (RAM), depending on system and configurations. By disabling the
optional services, you can improve the overall system performance to a
higher extent.

The following services are optional for normal Windows XP functionality. So,
these services can be safely disabled:

Alerter
Automatic Updates
Background Intelligent Transfer Service
ClipBook
Human Interface Device Access
Indexing Service
Messenger
NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing
Portable Media Serial Number
Secondary Logon
Smart Card
Smart Card Helper
Uninterruptible Power Supply
Wireless Zero Configuration
Background Intelligent Transfer Service

Procedure to disable a Service:

1. Click Start | Run | and type "Services.msc"
2. Right-click the service that you want to configure, and then click
Properties.
3. On the General tab, in the Startup type box, click Disabled.
4. Click OK and close the "Services" window.

Open MSConfig, Startup tab. Disable the applications which are not required
(optional)

you probably need all of then .., A lot are parts of the system.

But check in a run of MSConfig - Startup page to see if there are things
being loaded at boot that you do not think you need, and uncheck
candidates

HMMM...well I only have 16 processes running at startup and 2 of those
belong to my AV.
