Too many installed programs.

My pc is showing 208 installed programs. I would say that about 170 of them
are updates for windows, microsoft office and security updates. Is there a
way I can cut this down? Can they be uninstalled and another update be done
to maybe minimize this or I am just looking for trouble. My computer has a
512mb hard drive and I just upgraded to 1gb memory. When I check for system
optimization through my Tune-up program(not a free one) it tells me I have
too many programs installed.

Where are you seeing these installed programs?
If its via the Add/Remove dialogue untick 'show updates'

If you uninstall updates you will only have to install them again Updates
are not the same as Programs

Your Tune up app is giving dubious advice

I doubt your computer has a 512mb hard drive
Double click My Computer, on the desk top, this will show the size of your
drives

They don't make 512MB hard drives anymore and XP wouldn't fit on one
even if they did. What is the real size of your hard drive? How much
free space do you have?

If your computer isn't giving you any problems, leave the installed
programs alone, especially the updates.

You have a 512MB hard drive ?? Not likely. Windows takes up much more than
that.

You *should* not delete the updates for Windows, Office or the security
updates.

What "tune-up" program did you use ?? Sounds like you wasted your money.

Are you running Windows XP on this 512mb hard drive?

As others have mentioned, you do not have a 512 MB Hard Drive. Perhaps
your PC originally came with 512 MB of RAM (memory), and you recently
upgraded it to 1 GB of RAM.

How large is your hard drive? Double-click "My Computer." Look under
"Hard Disk Drives." What is the Total Size of your local disk (probably
C:)?

And how much free space is there?

For a good explanation of what RAM and hard disk space, see "RAM vs.
Hard Disk" at:
http://www.tekmom.com/buzzwords/zdramvhd.html

Also, which tune-up program are you running?

Sorry, I have a 80gb hard drive and have approx 50% free space it was 512 ram
and I upgraded to 1gb. My tuneup program is just call tune up from
www.tune-up.com and it just tells me how many programs are installed in
add/remove programs which is where the updates are. I am very pleased with
the program I have had it on my computer for 2-3 years with no problems
unless I created them myself. I do have the updates checked not to show. I
thought maybe they might have been repetive and could be removed. I do
regular cleaning and maintenance on it and come to this site if I have
questions. I hope to use this computer for a very long time and I take good
care of it.
Thank you so much I guess from the response that the updates should not be
removed and I will leave them where they are.

You may delete the hotfix uninstall files if you wish in order to have
more free space on your hard drive (although if you have plenty of free
space, it's not really necessary). See "Tip of the day: Safely discard
SP2 uninstall files" at

Do not uninstall these or you put back the security exposures they were
designed to fix.

and another update be done

No.

Not possible. Nothing that small has been made for many years. Windows XP
wouldn't even fit on such a small drive.

There is no such thing as having "too many programs installed," since there
is *no* downside to having more programs installed. What affects performance
is what's running, not what's installed.

Your tune-up program is telling you nonsense. You don't say which it is, but
I strongly recommend against all such programs. They are selling snake oil.
