too many active cells

When I click on the next cell location, the previous cell location boxe
remains in my spread sheet. I can not enter any data because I have too many
active cells in the spreadsheet. The problem is gone when I close and reopen
the file. What causes it?
 
In the Bottom right border of the Excel, do you see EXT (in the right part
the status bar). If so, hit F8 and EXT should disappear. This stands for
extend selection mode and can be toggled with F8.
