TOC wrong way around

Hi

I am having major problems with a TOC of a thesis. When I create a new TOC,
it comes out that the page numbers are left and the headings are right. E.g.

10....................................................................Introduction 1.
10..................................................................Rationale 1.1.
18....................................................................Practice 1.1.2

I had the same problem with the headings in the document and it seemed like
there was something wrong with the "normal" in the stylesheet. When I chose
not base the style on "normal" it fixed the problem in the document. I fixed
it the fist time in the TOC in the same way but when I updated the entire
table, it went all haywire again. Now, if I look at the style in the
stylesheet, it is not based on "normal" but it still looks weird.

What is wrong? I cannot figure it out. I will really appreciate anyone that
can help.

Thank you

Has Arabic or Hebrew ever been activated in your copy of Word? Which
version of Word do you use?

I spoke to the client this morning - apparently the thesis was typed on a
Saudi computer, so yes - probably Arabic. Do you have any suggestions how to
fix it?

I haven't faced this situation, so I can only suggest clicking the
little triangle button on the toolbar that switches from R-to-L to L-
to-R. If the copy of Word is primarily used for typing in Arabic, you
probably don't want to be changing basic settings.

I'm glad to see someone else with the same problem! I'm editing a document
that was typed in US English on a computer in the UAE. Everything else in the
document is OK but the TOC is back to front.

I'm working with my own version of Word which is set up for UK English, so
I'm not worried about any Arabic settings.

I have removed Arabic as an option under Options/Language settings - I
presume it added itself when I opened the document - but I still have same
problem.

I can't find a L-R arrow on my toolbar, as suggested by grammatim, so any
other ideas?

Thanks

Paul Williams

I suspect that if the L>R and R>L buttons aren't on a toolbar, then
Word doesn't realize you have some Arabic code in your document.

You should be able to add them with Customize Toolbars (inside the
down-arrow at the right of each toolbar). Though I don't know what
name to look for them under ...

Thanks very much. I have managed to find the L-R arrow, after a lengthy
search in OPtions/Customise, and it works. Strangely, it took three or four
goes before everything in the TOC was the right way round.
