inserting toc in word 2007

how do you insert a toc in word 2007? i went to reference tab, insert toc,
chose style and then typed all of my chapter headings...when i go to update
pg numbers it says there is no toc to update, to add toc click....the steps
done above.

im trying to finish my thesis and desperately need some help.

principles, which still apply in Word 2007. You don't create the entries in
the TOC manually; you apply styles to the headings themselves and then
select the styles you've used for the headings to appear in the TOC. If you
use Word's built-in heading styles, they will be included automatically.
