TOC hyperlinks return to SPECIFIC point

I've seen several entries regarding the vague use of this, but nothing that
actually works for me.

In my 5-page TOC, I click Section 2.0 (ctrl click) to quickjump to that text
that's on pg 17. Fine and good. To return to that literal, specific point in
my TOC, here is what I've tried:

Alt + left arrow - takes me to Figure 2-25 on page 87
Shift + F5 - sometimes takes me to start of TOC, sometimes takes me to
random sections, tables or figures
Return to TOC button - takes me to bottom of TOC (last page, last line,
Section Break)
Web tool bar back button - takes me to Table 2-20, then random tables,
figures and sections (h1, h2 etc.)

This is crucial that in my 266 page document I can scan my Table of Figures,
find an error, ctrl+click to the Figure in error, fix the error, and then
somehow get back to the ToF to update it and make sure the error is fixed.
Same with Table of Tables and the general TOC. Going back 'close to' where I
need wastes too much time, scanning my entire TOC, ToF and ToT wastes too
much time. I've barely made a dent in all the errors and formatting
corrections in this document, and it's due shortly.

There has to be a way back!!

Word doesnt support so much as history navigation; indeed Shift-F
supports up to the last 3 positions. The TOC and TOF are effectivel
fields, and seen by Word as one position. That explains, imho, th
random behaviour.
I use F5 (GoTo) + page number to go (back) to the right page a
accurately as possible. It requires that you remember the page numbe
in the TOC but with "only" 5 pages I believe this is the best you ca
