To Repair Install... or clean install

that is the question I have. I'm running XP Pro SP2 on a Intel systemboard
and an Intel 1.6 Ghz p4 processor.

Not long ago my 60GB master drive was running out of space, so I upgraded
the drive and added a DVD/CD drive (DVD and this New drive were 3 months
apart).

I set up the new larger drive as a slave, and copied the boot drive onto the
new drive using the vendors software. The first day windows allowed me to
update, and I also downloaded a new driver I found I required from intel for
the onboard ethernet adapter (Intel Pro 10/100 VE.)

Prior to that, the drivers this adapter were using, were for a PCI ethernet
board that I'd removed long ago. On next reboot I got to reactivate =o)
normally, and everything went fine until I installed IE 7 beta 2, to try it
out and it goofed everything up on my PC.

Because I couldn't fix the problem (appwiz said IE7 was uninstalled but I
couldn't revert back to IE 6), I zero'ed out the new drive, and then put the
old drive back on as the master drive and re copied the info again onto new
drive. Things went fine again for a day. Went back to update to get updates,
and then I installed the Intel Network driver a 2nd time. Next reboot -
more malarkey - only this time I had to reactivate by phone and be given a
new 50 digit unlock code. (1st time this has happened)

Seems now this current copied installation of Windows XP is still buggy, and
I cant seem to isolate whats causing this problem. I'm figuring that drive
cloning isn't all that its cracked up to be, so I'm wondering if a Repair
Installation could straighten this mess out - but now since I've called
Redmond Wa to get that 50 digit number this lastime... I'm leary about using
my old product key to make repairs.

I've already backed up the currentWPA.Bak and WPA.dbl, and also plan to
restore the current volume ID on Drive C (if need be after making these
repairs)

If that doesn't work - I'll need to put a clean install of Windows XP on
this PC. Will I be required to purchase a new product Key.. or can I still
use the old and hopefully be able to activate normally?

I know better than to multi-post... however, I posted this issue to
windowsxp.general - and didn't get any help so I made this post here.
