To rebuild Inbox Folder and Sent Folder

R

Ray10X10

I am using WinXP2 and Outlook Express

Under my Inbox Folder, and under my Sent Folder,
I have created several subfolders into which I have saved my E-mail.

My E-mail has become corrupted and needs to be rebuilt.

In order to rebuild my Inbox Folder and my Sent Folder,
do I need to delete all of the subfolders also?

Also, will MS Outlook hold more E-mail without becoming corrupted
than Outlook Express?

Which E-mail program is best:
MS Outlook or Outlook Express?

Again, thank you,

G

Ray

What are the sub-folders sub-folders of?

You should create sub-folders of Local Folders not the Inbox and Sent
Items.

How do you know the Inbox and Sent Items folders are corrupted?

Hope this helps.

When I send an E-mail, I receive an Error Message that the E-mail could not
be sent. The sent E-mail is put into my Outbox.
The Sent E-mail does not appear in my Sent box.
The application keeps asking me if I want to send the E-mail.

If I reply, "yes," it may send the E-mail,
but the Sent E-mail does not appear in my Sent Box.
So, I am kept in the dark about what happened to my Sent E-mail.

I am a computer novice, and I really appreciate your expertise and help.

Thank You,

Have you created any sub-folders of your Sent Items folder?

In Outlook Express place the cursor on Local Folders and select File,
Folder, New and name your new Folder AASent. Move any messages in your
Sent Items folder to AASent folder. Repeat the process if you have
created any sub-folders of the Sent Items folder.

Next in Outlook Express ascertain and write down the file path to the
Store Folder -Tools, Options, Maintenance, Store Folder. Next place the
cursor on Local Folders and select File, Work Offline followed by File,
Folder, Compact All. Do not attempt to interupt or stop the process
until it has completed. Close Outlook Express when it has completed.

Now go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View, Advanced Settings
and verify that the box before "Show hidden files and folders" is
checked and "Hide protected operating system files " is unchecked. You
may need to scroll down to see the second item. You should also make
certain that the box before "Hide extensions for known file types" is
not checked. Next in Windows Explorer make sure View, Details is
selected and then select View, Choose Details and check before Name,
Type, Total Size, and Free Space.

In Windows Explorer using the file path obtained earlier locate the
Outbox.dbx, and Sent Items.dbx and delete both. New files will be
automatically created when you next open Outlook Express.

Thank You So Much, Gerry,

for your new and different method to save E-mail files in the Sent Folder,
and Subfolders,
by creating a new AASent Folder, and to rebuild Sent Folder.

I hope a similar approach can be used to save my E-mail files in the Inbox
Folder and Inbox subfolders.
Please inform me how to save the files in my Inbox and Subfolders,
and then to rebuid the Inbox Folder.

Since you informed me that I can creat the AASent Folder, and,
I hope you can informed me that, in the same way,
an AAInbox Folder can be created to save the E-mail files in the Inbox.

Please clarify that the Inbox files can or cannot be saved in an AAInbox
Folder.

Thank You,

G

You can deal with your inbox using the same procedure as for your Sent
Items folder.

In the case of your inbox you can use message rules to move incoming
messages directly to AAInbox. Tools, Message Rules, Mail. You can create
sub-folders of AAinbox for say Fred, Peter, John etc.

To create a rule for e-mail messages
1. On the Tools menu, point to Message Rules, and then click Mail.
2. Message rules cannot be created for IMAP or HTTP e-mail accounts.
If this is the first rule you are creating, proceed to step 3.
Otherwise, on the Mail Rules tab, click New and proceed to step 4.
3. Select the conditions for your rule by selecting the desired check
boxes in the Conditions section. (You must select at least one
condition.)
You can specify multiple conditions for a single rule by selecting more
than one check box. Click the and hyperlink in the Rule Description
section to specify whether all of the rule conditions must be met before
the specified action occurs (and), or whether at least one must be met
(or).
4. Specify the actions for your rule by selecting the desired check
boxes in the Actions section. (You must select at least one condition.)
5. Click the underlined hyperlinks in the Rule Description section to
specify the conditions or actions for your rule.
You can click contains people or contains specific words in the Rule
Description section to specify the people or words you'd like Outlook
Express to look for in messages. If you enter multiple people or
multiple words per condition, use the Options button in the Select
People or Type Specific Words dialog boxes to further customize the
condition.
6. In the Name of the rule text box, select the default name or type a
new name for your rule, and then click OK.
Notes
You can create a new rule by selecting an existing one on the Message
Rules tab and clicking Copy. This is helpful when the new rule you want
to create is similar to an existing one.
You can create a rule from a message by selecting an e-mail message in
the main window and then on the Message menu clicking Create Rule from
Message. This helps by automatically filling in the name of the person
on the From line; no other information from the message, however, is
entered into the rule.

Actiion -5. Will be Move it to AA Inbox and Stop Processing More Rules.
For every Rule you need to include Stop Processing More Rules as an
action. Do not try the Delete option for Spam. Spammers are too clever
for this to work. Leave Spam in the Inbox and delete it manually. Take
care not to open links or attachments in spam as this can lead to nasty
malware infestations.

Using Message Rules in this way means that unsolicited Mail or Spam
tends to remain in the Inbox and is easier to single out for deletion.

You will have to manually move messages from your Sent Items folder to
AASent at intervals.

There are two main causes of dbx folder corruption. Allowing the
inbox.dbx, sent items.dbx and deleted items.dbx to get overlarge. The
second cause is interupting automatic compacting once it has started.
Automatic compacting is triggered after you have closed Outlook Express
100 times. I prefer to manually compact, which resets the counter. After
compacting you need to empty the Recycle bin.

Thank You So Much, Gerry,

.. . . for your expertise and willingness to help novices like me.

I was out of town for the Thanksgiving Holiday
and now I will work to follow your step by step plan.

May I ask you another question?
After I have moved my Inbox Folder into an AAInbox Folder,
and my Sent Folder into an AASent Folder,
how can I saved those new AA folders onto a CD?

Gerry, I sincerely thank you for the best advice
that I have heard about saving the E-mail Inbox and Sent Folders.

Hopefully, your advice will resolve a very big, complicated problem for me.

I wish for you a very Merry Christmas with your family and friends.

A genuine, "Thank You,"

Ray

You move the contents of the Inbox to AAInbox. Not the inbox folder.
