I am running win XP Pro SP2.

Do I need to install the Java Plug-in Program on Win XP? What would I gain?
What is the disadvantage? Will it dump a lot of spam and ads on me?

Thanks for your input

Virtually nothing and therfore you don't need it, unless you are a
developer.

No virtual disadvantage either and no *junk*- deposits.

Thanks for your input

You're welcome, Harry.

or someone else has a much better idea!
No virtual disadvantage either and no *junk*- deposits,

especially when using "Firefox".

No.

What would I gain?

The ability to run Java applets. Some websites use them, for online
games (yahoo). Also, some programs use Java. OpenOffice is one.

What is the disadvantage?

If you DON'T need it, it takes up resources that could be used
elsewhere. Also, a small chance that it could be vulnerable to hackers.

Will it dump a lot of spam and ads on me?

No. But if you're not careful it'll install the google toolbar on you.
