I cannot figure out how Windows Mail (in Vista) handles the autofill in the
To: field of new messages (or messages being forwarded). When I type the
first character in the To: field it shows me a few of the options from the
address book that match this character ... but not all of them. What
procedure does Windows Mail use for filling in this field ... it doesn't
seem to work the way Outlook worked under XP.

Thanks.

If you do that, it only uses a list of the last 29 addresses you sent email
to. When you want it to use the whole address book instead, click on
To: in the new message window before typing any characters, then type
enough characters to make the contact you want appear, click on it,
then click on which address line you want to put it on (To:, Cc:, or Bcc:).

Well, 29 seems like an arbitrary figure and search as I did I found no
reference to that in the Vista help section. Oh well, I really appreciate
the quick repsonse. Thanks.

That is known as the auto-complete feature.
Windows Mail does not auto-complete from your contacts.
It uses a separate list of the last 29 recipients you've sent mail to.
The auto-complete feature works much better in the replacement
program, Windows Live Mail, which uses the standard contacts list.
You are encouraged to upgrade to the newer WLM program:
