Title showing up in table of contents

I created a document with the first page being the title page and the second
the table of contents. All items on pages below the second page which I
wanted to show up in the table of contents are set up as Heading1. The
table of contents was created but the title page shows up in it. Can I get
it to ignore the 1st page of the document in the table of contents creation ?

You should be able to

1. My first choice would be to use a style that's not picked up by the TOC. Did
you also apply Heading 1 to the title page? If not, what's the name of the
style you used?

2. The other possibility would be to select the remainder of the document,
apply a bookmark to it, then make the TOC pick up only from the bookmarked
content. Look up TOC field in the Word Help and read up on the various switches
available. You'll find the one you need in that listing. Press Alt+F9 to toggle
the field codes on/off so that you can add the switch.

If you used Heading 1 on the title page, then you'll need to use a different
style. If you used the Title and/or Subtitle styles on the title page, then
you'll need to uncheck those styles in the TOC Options (they have built-in
outline levels of 1 and 2, respectively).
