Tiny Black Squares

I have a question that has been bugging me... but because it doesn't affect
my printed results, I have put off asking. But I wonder... sometimes when I
make a bulleted list and have "show hidden formatting" enabled, I get tiny
black boxes off to the left side of the page. On other bulleted lists, often
within the same document, these little black squares do not appear. can
anyone tell me what these are & why they sometimes appear?

TIA!

The black squares generally indicate that there is paragraph formatting
applied such as Keep with Next or Keep Together.

Neat! So can you recommend any quick and easy ways to find out what type of
formatting was applied to the sections with the tiny black squares?
