Times New Roman 12pt font behaving strangely

Has anyone else had a problem where, when typing in Times New Roman 12pt
font it keeps typing over itself so you cannot, in effect read anything that
you have typed? If you highlight the text and change font size or type, you
can read whatever it was you just typed but the only font that doesn't seem
to work is Times New Roman 12pt. Any thoughts?
