Win XP SP2 stand alone PC gives an error when trying to update with any of
the time servers in the diaklog accessible from Internet Time.

time.windows.com time.nist.gov etc all give message
An error occurred while Windows was synchronizing with time.windows.com
where is the error reported/logged and what could be the problem.

The solution is to use a different time server. You can choose an alternate
server and simply type in the address in the time server address window.
Note you need to be an administrator to do this. See the last part of this
page, ie. the "Windows XP NTP time synchronization configuration" section,
for help and links to alternative time servers. Ignore the parts about the
PocketPC...

Thanks Sooner or should that be Al,

I have tried all the servers in the time window and a few others from the
stratum2 list I found.
None of these worked. Any furthere thoughts on the problem?

So your saying that whatever time server you put into the address window the
time sync fails when you click the update button? Remember you need to be an
administrator to do this. You also need to click on OK after you select a
new server to make sure the change is permanent.

You can check the event logs for possible clues...

Are you behind a firewall or router? Are you running any type of software
firewall/anti-virus/anti-worm/etc software that may be causing an issue? Can
you ping the new server address? For example I can ping
time-b.timefreq.bldrdoc.gov which is the time server I happen to use.

I am having much the same problem. I've tried all servers mentioned, and I
can ping to all of them. I receive the same error each time: "An error
occurred while Windows was synchronizing with <server name>". Another thing
I've noticed is that very often when I reboot the time advances by several
hours, probably to Greenwich Mean Time. I don't necessarily see a common
thread.

Yes I am the administrator .
Yes I can ping the server you quote but it still gives the error.
Any more thoughts as to why?
Where is the error logged or recorded?
