I get an error message that "time executable" fails to run and that error
reporting wants to send the issue to Microsoft. I see no updates for my
WinXP SP2 on the update page. What is the problem? Every time I boot my
computer today it is doing this.

John,

Are you describing a run-time executable that fails? Please post the exact
error message if you can.

On thing you can do is to read through your event logs. Look for any
application and system errors listed there. You can click the date column in
the list to sort the list by date and put the latest ones first.

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrator Tools > Event Viewer.
Double-click on the event in question and the Properties dialog will show
you all the details.

OK I've narrowed the problem down to beginning this past Thursday and the
software causing it is my Lexmark 3300 printer drivers, letter to Lexmark
from me is below. The time executible had to terminate error went away after
I uninstalled the printer driver for my Lexmark 3350 printer tonight. After
cleaning the software out the error was gone. Of course the error came back
after I installed new drivers from the Lexmark website. I was reading
through the Windows Error Reporting report after seeing it for the upteenth
time and the first module listed was a lxcctime.exe thing. I wonder why
Micro$oft won't let us copy the full technical information from an error
report. Anyway I have e-mailed Lexmark about the error. It could be some
kind of a conflict with McAfee as well. I noticed Thursday night after I
came home for the day my computer told me it had a bad BOOT.INI file, so I
did a Phoenix CME Restore Pro back to the beginning of the day and that fixed
the bad BOOT.INI message. But it didn't fix the time executible had to close
and I may have lost what I was working on popup error.

Awe hell what do I have to lose I'll just summon the message body I sent to
Lexmark, I hope I am not revealing too much about my computer here but I
would really appreciate it if Microsoft could work with Lexmark to patch this
problem. It's a real eyesore to get a popup error every time you boot the
computer, and family members of mine are afraid of the computer as it is and
they just cringe when they see these things popup. I've scanned for stuff
using McAfee and Ad-Aware and nothing's been detected.

Dear Lexmark:
Your lexmark 3300 driver software is causing an error on my computer. It
started Thursday morning. I get a popup error when booting and when printing
saying "Time executable had to close unexpectedly and you may have lost what
you were working on." I have confirmed this by uninstalling the software and
not seeing the error at bootup and then reinstalling the software from your
website and getting the error every time I boot the computer or print a
document. I am very upset Lexmark and depend on my computer working
properly so I EXPECT a better answer than to try installing the driver
software again. YOU need to fix this error for me or I WILL not be buying
Lexmark printers or products in the future and I WILL be sharing this problem
with WHOEVER will listen if you cannot SOLVE it PLEASE.

The error report's header information includes the following information and
the text file attached for Microsoft Error Reporting is included below:

I have shut off error reporting and notification of critical errors and the
system doesn't popup the time executable error anymore but holding my head in
the sand won't help, as you instructed, I found this in the event viewer:

lxcculdr.dll, version 0.1.11.5, fault address 0x0000d1cc.

Reasons for corrupted files: viruses, poorly written installers that
overwrite with older files, disk errors (e.g., bad sectors), motherboard or
hard drive failing.

Well now that you have narrowed it down to the actual executable you can fix
it. The best approach is a systematic one. Jumping from one thing to another
confuses the issue and can also cause other problems as well. Having said
that, I would unplug and uninstall the drivers for both printers. Go to
Start > Settings > Printers and Faxes and remove both of the printers there
too. Rather than using a CD, go to the Lexmark site and download the latest
drivers for each of the printers. Install one printer as if it was "day one"
out of the box. Wait a day or so to see if you have any problems. Then
install the second printer.

Clear all temp files, Internet cache files, Recycle Bin, etc., then I would
get a different virus scanner (such as Avast which is free) and run it on
your machine. Download "Vcleaner.exe" from this page. Boot to safe mode.
Open a command window ("cmd" in run box) and run the program.

http://www.grisoft.com/doc/52/ww/crp/0

If you are still getting file corruption, or other problems are cropping up
as well, I would then suspect the hard drive or disk controller on the
motherboard may be failing.

Well I just had the computer in the shop to get a second hard disk put in and
I've run every free software known to me for disk error checking and to see
if the drive is failing or near to failing and my drives are good, I don't
know how to run "cmd" mode in a command window to run Vcleaner.exe but I'd be
shocked to learn McAfee couldn't find the problem but a free program could.

I've had other problems with Lexmark's drivers which I've had to work around
before. Their fax program causes a critical error in limited Windows XP
accounts, it says the fax program is already running. And when I logout the
limited used I get a message that FAXCOMM WIndow won't close do I want to
close it or cancel. I close it of course. Then so to fix that I had to go
into msconfig and take out their fax software from the startup items. I had
that problem with the Yahoo Widget engine when I wanted to uninstall it too,
the uninstaller didn't remove it from the startup of msconfig.

I do a lot on my hard drive and this computer is barely a year from brand
new so I don't see why it would be the motherboard or the hard drive
controller or the hard drive. Could it be the cheap KINGSTON RAM I have in
the computer? 2x 1GB 400MHZ/SDRAM?

I have uninstalled everything extra from bootup. I will try your clean
sweeping method, however I need more instructions on how to erase all of the
temp files and such. I am not an expert at this stuff nor a beginner. In
the meantime I'll just run with blinders on and hope for the best because
lots of my friends don't even run Microsoft Updates because they don't want
these errors cropping up.

McAfee and Norton have (IMHO) too many bells and whistles. What works are
virus scanners that scan for viruses and that's it. I have used many, many
versions of McAfee and found problems. AVG and Avast have never let me down.
I always recommend the good free stuff because when you are having a PC pain
the last thing you want to do is buy a lot of new software.

Running Vcleaner is easy. Download it and copy it to C:\ (C drive root
path). To boot in safe mode restart the PC and when you see the first DOS
text screen, either hold down the left ctrl key or press "F8" several times
until you see the Microsoft Startup Menu. Select safe mode. When the GUI is
all booted up you can click on Start > Run and type "cmd" (no quotes) in the
run box. It stands for "command.com" which is the command interpreter shell
window for in DOS shell mode. At the DOS prompt type "c:\vcleaner.exe" to
run the cleaner. DOS command are case insensitive.

Advanced Windows Care does a really good job of cleaning the registry, the
startup, and more.

http://www.iobit.com/

Be sure to read the help files before you get into it. If you have any
registry tweaks or a custom startup that is not default Windows, you have to
add those items to the Ignore List so AWC doesn't remove them.

Possible but not as likely.

I run automatic updates on many of my PC's but set it to download but allow
me to choose what to install. This allows me to block installation of any
updates that have bugs. Some can't be uninstalled.

One last site for free tools that I recommend:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/default.mspx

Again, please read the info before you run them.

Good Luck!

I did it all as you suggested. To no avail. Lexmark is the only software
causing these Microsoft Error Reporting Windows to popup. The computer works
fine, the printer works fine, the fax software works fine. I don't
understand why I need to see the popup window for Microsoft Errors when they
happen. I've had to disable error reporting and uncheck the show me critical
errors button. Why doesn't Microsoft offer a way to not show these errors to
the user but automatically send them in?

I had a problem with IE a while back and found out that was solved by
removing the comcast toolbar. So I am not too naive to believe this to be a
hardware problem. This is definately a problem with Microsoft not making
their OS workable with Lexmark. Lexmark and Microsoft need to communicate.
What we have here is a failure to communicate.

I was attempting to help you solve the error because there is a reason an
error event was fired. Perhaps there is no actual error, but a software bug
is throwing an error event erroneously. However, if you simply want to
disable the error reporting do this. Right-Click My Computer > Properties >
Advanced tab. Click the Error Reporting button. The Error Reporting dialog
allows you to enable, disable, or exclude certain programs from reporting
errors. I have mine disabled except for critical errors.

Often software companies are in such a hurry to launch the "latest and
greatest" that they let us end users run their "final beta" versions. We
test it and break it, they send out a service pack, or patch. The hardware
manufacturers also struggle to keep their firmware in stride with operating
systems and application software.

I chatted online with Lexmark this afternoon and the tech support rep. had me
uninstall/reinstall, then msconfigged out startup items to
uninstall/reinstall to make sure other software wasn't interfering with their
software and then I tried it all in Windows XP Safe Mode with
uninstalling/reinstalling and using selective startup with no items loading
in the startup items and it still gave me the error. I even uninstalled
McAfee for the entire time, fathom that.

When I disable Windows Error Reporting and select for critical errors, the
error still comes up and it just doesn't continue onto reporting it. I have
to de-select the item "tell me about critical errors" in order to have this
item not popup at all. The Lexmark 3300 (for my 3350 All-in-one Printer)
Imaging Studio software works, the fax software they provide works, it is
just the following error in detail which comes up in the Computer Management
Application Events Log:

Faulting application lxcctime.exe, version 0.1.11.5, faulting module
lxcculdr.dll, version 0.1.11.5, fault address 0x0000d1cc.

It registers as a 5000, 5001 error which is severe according to Microsoft.
I don't believe this categorization is proper for Microsoft to make since the
error doesn't make the computer or any software non-functional.

Okay none of you have answered the question. One problem I found is that
Lexmark's fax solution would load in startup items and then not run because
it said it was already running, so I took it out of selective startup and it
works fine now. I don't get the error anymore but I think that is due to an
update from windows update. Getting help from microsoft is a huge problem.
They are such a monopoly.
