tiff to jpeg conversion

I am attempting to insert a large number of images (maps) from a government
website into a word document. The images come to me as tiff files. When I
insert them the document bogs down when printing.

these are long documents, 50 to 100 pages, and I am trying to insert as many
as 30 images.

I have tried coverting the tiff to jpeg, but the jpeg files seem very large
2,000 - 3000 KB.

is there an easy way to do this?

How are you converting to jpeg's? Some programs have an "options" button
when you convert that allows you to adjust the size of your jpeg file. You
can make the file size smaller but of course this also decreases the quality.

Before i was able to find the maps and exhibits on the web, I was scanning
them in to the document from a Microteck Scanmaker 4900, and they were coming
in as jpeg files 140 to 250 kb.

The internet files are tiff files of about the same size. I downloaded a
coversion program;

Easy Graphic Converter 1.2, it has a couple of options including.
JPEG Quality 1% to 100%
Progressive or not
Bits per pixel 8 or 24
resize options
no resize
best fit
exact size

Using a low resolution, I am able to get the file size down to 300 to 400
kb, about the size of a photo, which should work, but it still seems to bog
down the system, both the computer and the printer.

I'm no expert but if you're putting that many images in any kind of document,
it'll slow everything down considerably. You could divide your document into
2 separate docs to speed things up.

I guess the biggest question is why does the system treat converted jpeg
files different than ones that come in from the scanner? I have the same
document with the same maps, one copy has the maps from the internet and one
has the maps from the scanner, and they behave different.
