Tell us what happens when you try to open the file.
You get a message? What is the message?
Or nothing happens?

the computer does not recognise that a disk is in the
drive D or E however when I put the disk in my daughters
drive ( she is on windows 2000) it reads the disk ok.

if it helps I have tried saving photos as .tif but when I
look at the properties it says it is a microsoft office
document Imaging file as opposed to a tagged image file
format. is it xp that is the problem or do I need some
software.????

thanks for the reply and hope you can help Yves

OK. This is a different problem.
If your computer does not recognize that the disk is in drive D or E, it
makes no difference what kind of files are on the CD. I am assuming here
that XP does recognize other CDs and that you have used other CDs and they
worked when using these drives.
If this is the case, this particular CD may have been recorded some years
ago and you now need to install a UDF reader. Just installing this may work.
If not, you may have to go further and purchase and install Roxio 7 (if this
CD was burned before XP, it is likely that an earlier version of Roxio was
used to burn it).
At least this would get XP to recognize the CD and list the files on it. If
they are .tif files, XP may not be able to open them even if it recognizes
the CD and list the files. If so, try to open them using a free and very
good photo viewer and editor available here:
www.irfanview.com
For how to get and install a UDF reader, read below.

Make a new folder on your C drive.
Name it UDF reader
Go to this site and download the UDF reader file in this UDF reader folder.
http://download.com.com/3000-2100-9497911.html
Once downloaded, open the folder and double click on the file to install it.
Reboot your computer.
You should now be able to read your old CDs.
A good idea once you can read the files from your old CD is to copy the
files from your old CDs back on your hard drive.
Then copy the files to a new CD using XP. You will now have new CDs readable
on any XP computer.

There is also another possibility, particularly if you upgraded to XP.

In this case, check at the site of the CD drive manufacturer for the latest
driver compatible with XP. Download the driver and install it.

As for trying saving photos as .tif and they show up as something else, you
would have to tell us what you did.

What kind of "photos" did you try to save as .tif? From a scanner? Or you
have typical photos from a digital camera saved as .jpg and after opening
them in some photo viewer or editor you decided to Save as and selected .tif
as the file format?
