Hi

I had dial up internet until a few days ago. and liked the program
'Tick' which gave an on-screen indication of connection and download
rate. I've now gone over to broadband and I've looked around and tried
to find something similar for Broadband but so far to no avail. Does
anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Do you use Windows XP? In this OS, you can activate a tray icon

Network connections
(specific connection)
"properties" button (below the activities window)

there should be a tick box that says something like "show active
connection in systray" (mine is in German). Second from bottom up.

I would like to know of an app that does this too.

You will have to run a test on a "Speed Test Server" to get that information
correctly. Other than the STS we had set up for our own systems through our
Network Operations Center, dslreports at
http://www.dslreports.com/stest?loc=1 or just go into www.dslreports.com and
look for which test you want to run as there are many. As some systems are
"Stepped" and your up and downstreams vary there is no applet that is going
to give you any kind of accurate reading regardless of what claims they
might make. You can also use dslreports (And you dont have to use dsl, it
can be any broadband connection) to run a monitor on your system and give
you daily or better updates.

Why do you want to change? I found that Tick works perfectly well with
broadband.

I just tried it. It only works with DUN (dialup). What sort pf
broadband do you have? The only thing I can think of is that certain
users might be using something like RASPPPOE which ties into DUN. But
probably most broadband users would find the program useless.

I don't know what RASPPPOE is, but I suspect that you may be right. FWIW I
am using TiscaliUK. If anyone can clarify this please post.

I suspect you might be using a ISDN line which isn't considered
"broadband". Maybe something like 128KB/sec? XDSL or cable
speeds are much faster.

Clicking the status icon I find:
Device Name: USB ADSL WAN Adapter
Device Type: ISDN
Speed 1.1 Mbps

Looks as if your suspicion is correct, although I find the 1.1 Mbps
adequate.
