I just got the following response from Symantec support. To summarize
"Thunderbird cannot be integrated with your Norton AntiVirus 2008."
Note that the support person states that "Norton AntiVirus 2008 built
in such a way that it will only support the E-mail client as follows:
Microsoft Outlook 2000 and above, Outlook Express - 5.01 sp2, 5.50
sp2, 6.0, 6.01 sp1".

Unbelievable!

Partial transcript of email exchange with Symatic support follows:

Hello Andrew,

We welcome you back to our Symantec Online Technical Support.

Andrew, please note that, Norton AntiVirus 2008 built in such a way
that it will only support the E-mail client as follows:

· Microsoft Outlook 2000 and above
· Outlook Express - 5.01 sp2, 5.50 sp2, 6.0, 6.01 sp1

Hence, Thunderbird cannot be integrated with your Norton AntiVirus
2008.

In order to resolve this issue, I suggest you to install Microsoft
Outlook or Outlook Express.

I followed the instructions in the recommend article: (http://
solutions.symantec.com/sdccommon/asp/symcu_contentredirect.asp?
docid=20070613182306EN&lg=en&seg=hho&ct=us&src=w).

Updating Norton AntiVirus 2008 did not solve the problem. I am NOT
using a Norton firewall, rather I am using Windows Firewall, which I
have not changed. Please note that I have Windows Firewall configured
to give me a notice whenever it blocks any traffic; however, I am not
getting an notices. I have confirmed that the problem
persists even when Windows Firewall is turned off.

Most recently, after uninstalling Norton AntiVirus 2008, Thunderbird
worked just fine.

Having re-installed Norton AntiVirus 2008, the problem has now
returned.

I don't think that it reasonable that I should have to turn off
incoming virus protection in order to use my mail client. The whole
point of this product is to protect me from possible incoming viruses,
right?

When I have incoming email scanning turned on, I get the following
error when trying to connect to my mail server using Thunderbird:
"sending of password did not succeed"

If I turn it off then the problem goes away, but this doesn't seem
like a very good solution.

Thanks for any help you can offer

An example of a back-room deal between Micro$oft and
$Third_Party_Provider. You want to be functional under Vista? Then
you play by our rules.

If you're running Vista, then I can't give you any suggestions (other
than go back to XP).

If you're not running Vista, then get a copy of Symantec Corporate
(version 8 or 9, maybe 10) and use it. It never expires.

If you can find NAV 2002, then get it. It will update itself to
current virus def's and scan engine, and it supports all e-mail
clients that use pop3.

I'm using XP. The version of NAV that it came with has been working
just fine for 3+ years, but when I went to update it this weekend it
made me upgrade to 2008!
