Thumbnails slow to load

Hi all,
I am experiencing problems with the displaying of thumbnails of picture
files when browsing through folders. These thumbnails are taking quite a
while to load which can get annoying when I am looking at images on my
digital camera's SD card for example. I have a suspicion that it has been
like this since I installed one of the windows updates but I am not 100% sure.
I have two questions:
Is there any way I can speed up the display of thumbnails?
If it is one of the updates that is causing this, which one is it?

I have also been told that with one of the updates makes windows scan each
image file for viruses when you open the folder containing them. Is this
true? If so is there any way I can turn this off?
