thumbnails are not showing the right pic!

Sorry about my computer illiteracy and possible wrong terminology, but wonder if anyone could help me? My daughter has put lots of digital photos onto my computer, and I have managed to put them all in the right order, naming and numbering them etc. I thought I had done a good job, but when I went back into the file, many of the thumbnails had apparently duplicated themselves - ie there were two of the same ones on the screen, replacing the thumbnail which had originally been there. A lot of the icons had vanished, BUT when I clicked on the thumbnail, it showed up the original pic which was there before. I have tried everything to get back the thumbnails as they should be, but to no avail. Wondered whether I should reload the disk and start again?

Help please someone? Thanks.
