Can a thumb drive be used as a backup storage device in case of a pc
failure?

Mini-USB drives come in various capacities. I do know if they are supported
by any backup program. However, you can always copy your data files to
these drives for data backup.

The largest mini-USB drive I am aware of is 1 Gb. Much too small for a full
system backup.

More detail of exactly what you want to accomplish would help.
