This one may stump you

Hello all-

One of my network users just brought me his home pc with a problem I have
never encountered before:

The machine has windows 2000 Pro installed and is not part of a domain. The
only peculiar thing about it is when I built it for him, I set the registry
to auto logon to the local administrator account. The machine boots up, does
its auto logon, goes through 'Loading your personal settings', waits a few
seconds, then shows the 'Saving your settings' message, logs out and goes
straight back to the logon screen and continutes thus in a constant loop. It
never reboots. It even does the same thing in safe mode.

I have taken the HD out of it and put it in another machine to dcan for
viruses, but it came back clean.

Any pointers would be welcomed, as I don't particularly want to rebuild this
machine for him.

Thanks,
DVS

Hold the shift key to prevent the auto-logon. Check the various startup folders and
registry entries to see what's logging him off. Sounds like a prank.

Shift key doesn't stop the autologon. It just keeps on with its loop
regardless of what key is pressed or when.

Thanks though.

This is not a quiz show. If you create a meaningful Subject
line then you are much more likely to attract the attention of
respondents who are familiar with your problem.

The phenomenon you describe is well known. It is caused
by the system drive letter being incorrect which prevents the
system from running userinit.exe. There are various remedies -
here is one of them:

The underlying cause is usually an attempt to use imaging
techniques to clone an installation or perhaps the installation
of an additional hard disk.

Nothing has changed as far as the drive letters go?
