This NG has become NG for me

T

TedK

For more than a year (or has it been two or three?), I have followed ACF
and learned a great deal about various freeware programs, downloading a
countless number of them. What I found informative were the comments
responding to various questions and discussions relating to specific
programs. It has been my preferred NG.

In the past several weeks I find few postings from the people I found a
source of information. Instead, today I find over 1,000 posts, too many
of which come from Protean, R.L., Tramp and Vegard Krog, that relate to
individual programs that, for the most part, are of no interest to me.
Trying to review all of them is a time-consuming and frustrating
effort. A use of my time that I cannot expend.

As far as I am concernted (and I am sure nobody much gives a damn),this
NG has become a waste of time. It has, in my opinion, lost its relevance
in the context of providing freeware information.

I'm going to rely on Pricelessware, SOS, and a couple of other
bookmarked freeware sites -- and, of course, Google!

Goodbye, dear ACF -- you were my unspoiled virgin -- how could you
become a whore?

I concur. The attempts by the aforementioned posters to "get back to
freeware" after the PL temper tantrum has instead turned the group into
nothing more than a laundry list of all the freeware links these guys
can copy and paste, with little or nothing of value. If that's all I
wanted, I'd just go read a website list.

Yes, and they are not even so nice as to write an [ANNOUNCE] in the
subject as help for filtering. Instead, one has to filter the poster,
and still get all the replies. :(

Filtering articles from those posters (or at least on articles from
them without References headers) should make the group manageable for
you again.

To the both of you, why can't you simply filter out their posts if you
don't like them?

So, what particular programs do you want to discuss? Let's
start it right now right here :) I myself have had fun
taking about Firefox ... You know, everyone can start a thread
that they like...seriously, what types of programs are you
interested in? Let's go for a venture to find them, review
them, and dicuss them (and perhaps even make them :) sound
like a good idea?

In the past several weeks I find few postings from the
people I found a source of information. Instead, today I

One way I do is to make good use of the scoring system or
fitering system of my newsreader. I use Xnews and it is
indeed great. For example, I am not a big fan of image
program or mp3 program - so I set those key words so that that
the newsreader would assign a lower score to them and filter
them out. Besides Xnews, Pimmy is another good one achieve
this filter - it can do filter within the text message, really
nice. (but of course, you can always filter me the author :)
no problem)
As far as I am concernted (and I am sure nobody much gives
a damn),this NG has become a waste of time. It has, in my
opinion, lost its relevance in the context of providing
freeware information.

You can always start a dissussion that *you* are interested
in, I sure will try to join the discussion if it is something
that I am also interested in.
I'm going to rely on Pricelessware, SOS, and a couple of

They are always good, of course, no object to that :)
Goodbye, dear ACF -- you were my unspoiled virgin -- how
could you become a whore?

That....sound a bit troll-like to me ...but of course, I would
give you the benifit of the doubts...

I could and I may. I use a killfile only very, very rarely -- in most
situations (both here and elsewhere), even the biggest pains-in-the-neck
will occasionally offer up a gem.

I believe this "flooding" of the group was initially done to make a
point, and to drown out the cacophony surrounding the PL webmaster
controversy. The point's been made and the shouting has died down. Time
to give it a rest.

I do concur even though I still am a freeware whore.
There are far too many postings for games and children's progs of which I
think are just a flood to drown out the new 'Pricelessware' mirrors which
is rather sad because the group, a.f.c, could still work in harmony without
the spamming flood.

I was looking forward to Gordan Darling's posts but had to keep pressing 'N'
through new posts in hopes of getting something that was useable to me, in
particular I had to wade through the games which belong on a.c.f.g. instead
of here.

Even though I use Linux I am also looking for freeware for my wife's XP.
Yes, I could use a filter as >>Q<< suggests but I don't believe in filters
because I think each of use have something to contribute, even opinions of
which I could not care of but I file away for information for the people
who do not read this group which BTW is in the millions.
It isn't the only forum in town Boys. When you are cruising other groups do
you not recommend that someone come here in search of something
(spyblaster) that they would not have heard of that might solve their
problems?
I do and I know you do too.
Everyone knows Spybot and Ad-Aware.

1. It's Vegard Krog *Petersen*, thank you! :)
2. I have no agenda - just going through some old notes of
interesting programs/games from my old 'PC Utilities' coverdiscs.
3. Am I required to use [Announce] when posting links to games /
programs that are not mine???
4. Yippi - 16 posts and some-one has finally killfiled me! :)

Good weekend to you all.

The flooding wouldn't matter so much if a short description was given in
the subject line. Most programs are properly named, but many can throw
you off. If I saw the subject "Crack-Up", Some would likely think it was
for some sort of security-related program, not knowing it was actually a
tool to check HD fragmentation.

John's right. I also filter out the annoying posts to preserve my sanity and
to save time. However, some of the flooders are good folks, and do not
deserve being permanently killfiled. Instead, I put them in the "cooler" by
setting a time limit (usually 14 days) on my kill filter. It's amazing how
quickly things get back to normal when annoying posts are ignored instead of
piled on. Oh, and never tell anyone you're plonking them. That's the best
way.

Agreed.

I would worry about it Vegard, too many people seem to "quietly" appreciate
these floods than those that do not. Like John said, if someone's annoyed
then maybe they need to use filters.

However, what we can start doing (and I'm going to post this else where so
that other flooders see this) is to put "mini" descriptions in the subject
like, such as if its another archive program, a notepad replacement, a game,
a directory utility, a screen saver, a kids program, etc. Would that help ?

A flood of freeware (on-topic) will always be appreciated more than a
flood of flames.

And the names of the programs and way they are posted are easily
discerned. I myself have by-passed most without any problem.

and there are programs that never get mentioned or recognized at all until
they are noted here, in acf. some of these are quite good, frankly, and
probably better than whats on that so called pricelessware list. flooding
is not only good for readers of acf but its also good for freeware
developers to get their work at least recognized so that somone may find use
for it. certainly in these floods i'm not the only one who has found more
than one useful program posted that I now use, correct?
