I solved this by going in the main screen to options then spelling, then
checked German as the language, then ran a spellcheck, then went back and
checked English as the language. Now it works.

This is a very simple fix. Open up your vista mail software. Go to the
menu>tools>options. You must make sure you are opening "tools" in the menu on
the main page of mail, NOT in an individual email you are creating because
there is no option there. So on the main page go to
"tools">"options">"Spelling" tab.
In the Spelling tab it gives you the options of at least 3 languages. Click
on one other than English and then hit the "apply" button. Now go back and
choose "English" and hit "apply" and then hit "ok".
It works, I have corrected several peoples vista email this way. good luck
