This group needs splitting?

This is the only day in the last week that I've been able to scan through
the postings
in this group. Reason: like some others I used to enjoy, the volume of
postings has
become too great. I guess there always has to be a "general", and people
can't be
prevented from posting all manner of relevant content. But could we maybe
have
a few more specialized groups spawned to take some of the pressure off this
one
by giving people alternate places to post?

Your mileage may vary, of course. :)

There are some existing specialized newsgroups. See this link for a listing:

Actually the volume of posts in here is down. I think with Vista a lot of
folks are playing with that. Used to be on a busy day there were 1000+
posts. Now it's half that.

That would be a *terrible* thing, in my view. It sounds great, but splitting
newsgroups always works in the wrong direction. It doesn't decrease traffic
in the parent newsgroup, because people continue to post there *and* in the
new child newsgroups, hoping for greater exposure. And they usually
multipost, rather than crossspost.

Most of us would end up reading the extra newsgroups as well as the parent,
and the end result is overall *increased* newsgroup traffic.

There are already too many XP newsgroups, and groups like general, basics,
and newusers largely duplicate each other. Even Help_and_Support, which
is*supposed* to be about the Windows "Help and Support" function is
misunderstood and just becomes another "general" group, largely duplicating
the purpose of others. We would be much better off with *fewer* newsgroups,
not more.

And a few vista users are posting in here as well :)
I think the updates group is the hardest to follow at the moment - so many
duplicate posts within one thread.
I go in there for 'depression therapy'

Lol..I haven't dipped a toe into the "slough of despond" in quite awhile.
Been too cheery lately to risk it.

Richard, isn't there a way to see how many posts are made to a specific
newsgroup in a month? How to do that slips my memory at the moment.

It looks like 13,212 messages in this group from 9/1 through 9/30.

Thanks Jon - but re the updates, which seems lower than I would have
thought, the posts would be much higher if the fact that many threads have
posters saying ' I have the same problem ' was taken into consideration.
Antioch

Yeah - 2228 posts officially last month. Thought it interesting that approx
10% of those are made by 2 people.
