this computer is in use and has been locked

I get the "this computer is in use and has been locked" message. I do
not have the prompt for password when computer resumes from standby
checked off. I click the enter button and get back to my screen.
However, now I cannot access any program. I get an "application failed
to initialize properly (0x0000142) error message. The only way I can
get control of computer back is to reboot the computer. This problem
started happening out of the blue. My norton virus and parasite
programs do not find anything. Can anyone help me on this?

I suspect there are more details in the error message than you are
posting. The full text of the message is needed. This can be difficult
if you only briefly see the message flash across the screen.

I suggest you Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should
help by allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click
on the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
StartUp and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Enable automatic restart on system failure after you have captured /
copied the message in a further post here.

An error report should also appear in the System log of Event Viewer.
You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. Please post a copy of that report.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;enus;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message(email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

When you post the same message to more than one newsgroup please cross
post so that all know how the query develops. However, do not cross post
to more than three newsgroups.

Hope this helps.

Gerry,
I tried the event viewer and found an error message that said windows
cannot unload your registry file. The memory used by the registry has
not been freed. To make a long story short I was led to the Microsodt
help site and told to download a user file hive unload cleanup program
to resolve my problem. I did that and ran it. It seemed to work for a
day or so, but today the same problem occured. I was told the computer
was locked. I clicked OK, the popup dissapeard, but every program I
tried to load the "program failed to initialize properly (0x0000132)"
came up. I'm back to square one. Any suggestions? Thanks for your
help.

You are still posting small bits from error messages. The full text is
needed, Please look again at my earlier message.

Do you have a digital camera? If yes what make and model and when did
you buy it?
