Windows xP Pro SP1

computer shut down, by using "start" button, yesterday

Today, when PC was turned on, warning appeared: "This computer is in use
and has been locked." Computer unresponsive to

mouse or keyboard input.

Only way to re-boot is to unplug PC, wait a while, plug it in again.

Carey:
Thanks.

Yes, I have seen that article. There must be other causes, because the 2
causes listed do not apply.

I turned the PC off, transported it to my shop, using a different mouse &
keyboard, it booted.

Scan for viruses > 1 found

Hard disk drive diagnostics [ thorough ] > no problems

sfc /scannow ran smoothly

I ran the screen saver, for > 5 minutes, no problem.

I'll test this with the same mouse & keyboard.
