Thin Client in the Home

M

Matthew Schwarz

I have very little knowledge about a Thin Client environment.

I'd like to buy a pretty solid desktop and then buy a couple netbooks. Since
the faster hard drives (SSDs) are typically quite small, like 8 GB, when in
my house I think it would be cool to use the netbooks as Thin Clients and the
desktop as a server.

In broad terms, could that be done in Vista or even Windows 7? How?

Thank you.

The first thing a thin client needs is a server to connect to. This
requires specialized software and is not something you can just turn on in a
desktop operating system. You'd need to purchase additional, expensive
software to attempt this. It's also pretty likely that your netbook will
not work as a thin client since that is generally done in hardware/firmware
on the client, again it's not something you can switch on and off from such
a device.

Hi Matthew Schwarz

Have a look at MS Windows Home Server OS.

This is what I use on a old P4 with 4 HD, looks after 6 Notebooks.

Back-up, File sharing, kids can go away, any way in the world send back
there photos etc over the web to are Server.

I believe the OP is looking for an Application server. Install the software
on one machine and let many clients run it.
