Here's another plea from a hapless Windows XP Pro user who cannot use the
MSI to install or uninstall anything.

I've already tried the following:

MSIEXEC /REGSERVER from Safe Mode
Reinstalling the Windows Installer, as detailed in Q315346.

Did a clean install from the Windows XP setup disk (not reformatting - just
a clean install).

Checked the permissions for SYSTEM in the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.

Here's the log file from my last attempt:

Hey gang - following up my own message with the answer. In another thread,
I found a reference to this MS article:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301

Which discusses the Windows Installer Clean Up utility. The only problem:
In their infinite wisdom, MS had wrapped the utility in - you guessed it -
the installer! So, I had the fix, but I couldn't install it!

I simply installed it to another machine on the network, then executed the
program on the machine with the messed up installer. I will need to
reinstall some apps - namely MS Office - and a few others I'm sure - but
it's all working now!
